Turnover stable at high level

  • 66.5 million euros turnover in 2017
  • Market leadership of the Wind Division secured
  • Zangerl: “The year ahead will be challenging. I am expecting further growth as of 2019.”

With a turnover of 66.5 million euros, the annual results for the Vorarlberg-based industrial enterprise Bachmann Electronic were as expected. “This is no record result, but seen in terms of recent years, the turnover and earnings performance has remained stable at a high level”, is managing director Bernhard Zangerl’s assessment of the figures.

The past year’s highlights were the establishment of a development location in Innsbruck, investment in new production facilities at the Feldkirch works, and reaching the 100,000 mark for automated wind turbines. The latter is to be seen as a strengthening of the company’s leading market position and means that “one in three wind turbines in the world has a control or condition monitoring system made in Austria.”

The number of employees hardly changed in 2017, whereby it was primarily the acute lack of skilled professionals that, despite attractive conditions and interesting areas of work, limited the filling of a number of vacancies. Bachmann currently employs 451 people worldwide, 307 of whom at the headquarters in Feldkirch. That the employees are happy is confirmed by indirect indicators such as low fluctuation and sickness rates. These are about half of the normal sector rates. “This shows me that we cultivate our corporate culture well with the key values of progress, respect and responsibility” explains Bernhard Zangerl.

The outlook for 2018 promises about the same level of turnover. Manufacturers of wind turbines continue to be under great cost pressure, and this is something that suppliers are experiencing in turn. This is why our additional focus will be on the utilities and operators. They can optimise the yield and service life of their wind farms with condition monitoring systems.

Shifts and fluctuations in the use of other renewable energy sources, triggered by the accompanying regulations for the implementation of the energy transition will continue to characterise the market and the renewables sector. In this area Bachmann is in particular strategically addressing the markets for energy storage systems, hybrid power plants and the infrastructure for electric mobility. This is where the company already sees potential today, and also for the medium and long term.

The industry division is on the one hand profiting from the current positive economic climate, and on the other hand it is operating in a very hard-fought environment, especially for standard applications. Nevertheless, Bachmann is still expecting a slight increase in sales in 2018, whereby as a manufacturer of automation solutions it will be focusing on future-oriented niches with strict requirements concerning reliability, safety, robustness and performance – features that are particularly characteristic of solutions from Bachmann.

The maritime division can also hope for a positive year. There are signs of a recovery and stabilisation of the markets, and the strategic partnership with renowned customers like Hyundai Electric will be going into series production.

“All this means we are looking at a challenging market environment with increased cost pressure for 2018. The four target sectors provide a healthy balance of challenges and opportunities, though I expect noticeable additional potential resulting from current new projects as of 2019”, predicts Bernhard Zangerl.
