Multifunctional Grid Meters & Relays

A scalable range of integrable, multifunctional power meters are available as plug-in modules for the M1 automation system. The measurement of all characteristic grid variables such as voltage, current, power or frequency directly within the control system allows significant correlation with other operational data, as well as an excellent reaction time. The measured data is rapidly calculated without additional delays due to field-busses or transceivers.

The portfolio begins with the GM260, which is suitable for energy monitoring according to ISO 50001, operational machine control, and power consumption related fault detection. A remanent 4Q power meter per circuit calculates active and reactive power independently from the PLC.

For use in power generation systems and virtual power plants, the GMP232/x family adds extremely fast and accurate continuous RMS measurements, fundamental extraction, and symmetrical components while meeting CAT IV according to IEC 60664. Outstanding frequency accuracy of 1mHz, with 12 updates per cycle ensures easy tracking even within weak microgrids or islanded regions. Configurable digital protection functions ensure grid code compliance and system self-protection. The built-in transient fault recorder logs 10kHz waveform data in IEEE C37.111 and IEC 60255-24 COMTRADE format and continuously delivers this data to user applications on the CPU. Grid events are logged with globally-synchronized timestamps to analyze any deviations with relation to other reference points. Harmonic analysis directly on the module provides spectral data up to the 50th harmonic along with related distortion factors, which allows an objective evaluation of power quality.

Finally, the GSP274 family adds automatic synchronization to the busbar or grid combined with VDE-AR-N 4105 compliant network and system protection (NS-Protection) that can withstand single faults.

Each module type integrates with the entire M1 IO portfolio and can be used multiple times per CPU. The PLC’s SSL/TLS secured authentication and authorization unit protects the grid measurement modules from unwanted changes and cyber-attacks. All types of field busses, including SAE J1939 as well as OPC UA and RTU standards such as IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-101/-103/-104, DNP3 or Modbus, are available to exchange data with network operators, plant controllers or generation units. Existing type approvals for generation units according to VDE-AR-N 4105/4110, ENA ER G99 and IEEE Std. C37.90 simplify the operational notification and compliance process. Maritime Class Approvals from DNV/GL, BV, LR, ABS, RINA, KR and NK allow implementation on vessels and offshore installations. Compliance with UL/cUL and CSA make the units suitable for applications in North America. A coated version allows grid measurement and protection even in challenging environments with high humidity, from tropical heat to cold starts in polar regions.

Grid measurement and protection as an integral part of a modular PLC system can be seen from two perspectives:

  • Fully programmable and extensible measurement and protection solution:
    API for raw data sampling and all calculated quantities in connection with the open programmable CPU system allows flexible adaptation to multiple measuring tasks.

  • Operational control (PLC) extended with grid measurement and protection:
    Unifying the control system with grid measurement and protection leads to outstanding reaction time and is also cost efficient due to the reduction of unnecessary components & minimal training effort.
